Delving into Threads

Social media is defined as the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks

I took a trip down memorylane today. When I first joined Threads, it was an up-and-coming alternative to Twitter that seemed to have too few members. The way it worked appeared esoteric in nature, with many people wondering the same thing.

                                                      “How does this work?”

However, I’ve returned to threads for one simple reason. I no longer enjoy being on Twitter.

For the purpose of my eSports team, I’ll continue to have a presence on X. It is the main biome through which eSports teams and tournaments communicate with each other—even more than email, most of the time. But personally, I no longer enjoy social media. There’s too much politics and “look at me”—too much hand-wringing and inept rage.

Twitter, X, or whatever else you want to call it, has lost its grip on me. To be fair, I never was very prolific in my postings and “tweets”, but now I have even less of a reason to be there.

Instead, I turned to Threads today and experienced something that I never did on Twitter. A community-like feeling.

Because of my paranoia about stolen information and constant listening when I don’t want it to, I refuse to use TikTok. If I’m going to be spied on, I prefer to do it the American way. Thus, I use Facebook.

That means I never created a TikTok page or dove into Booktok like others within my genre have. It’s a fast (though not easy) way to potentially gain followers and expand the coverage of your novel. But, with my discovery of Bookthreads, I now have an alternative option.

Within an hour of posting within it and a few posts on other people’s Threads, I received immediate feedback. And the amazing thing? They were friendly. I haven’t seen this kind of friendliness from a stranger on social media since the last time I looked in the mirror and found myself attractive—years ago…

But still, this is a new atmosphere to explore. So far, I’ve found Bookthreads, Writerthreads, and a few others that I can dive into.

I humbly suggest others give it the same chance.

At least, so far, nobody has made me feel bad for being a political independent.
